The
art workshops offer a nurturing environment for cancer patients
to explore visual self-expression. No prior artistic experience
is necessary, as a studio class is new for many patients.
The object is to guide the patient/student through the process
of learning how to “see” in a new way and then
communicate that “vision” artistically using
a variety of media. A critique is held at the end of each
session. Participation in the evaluation process is vital
to artistic development, additionally offering an opportunity
to learn the importance of giving and receiving constructive
criticism. The students are encouraged to practice drawing
outside of class and are given some materials with which
to do so. This helps to reinforce what is learned in class
while stimulating self-motivation.
